Winelle
Wilford
d. Feb 13, 2024
Winelle Rae Pommerville Wilford died Tuesday, February 13, 2024, after suffering a stroke. She was 88 years old. Winelle was born May 2, 1935, in Long Beach, California, the oldest child of William Wilfred and Nellie Molly Murphy Pommerville. She had one younger brother, Robert (Bob). She grew up in East Los Angeles, graduating from Garfield High School, class of 1952. Winelle was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and very involved in church activities. A talented violinist, she was concertmistress of her high school orchestra and often played in musical groups or as a soloist for church or civic functions. She also had a lovely singing voice and sang with various ensembles in college and at church. Winelle worked her way through college, graduating from Brigham Young University in 1959. Winelle married Elmer Wilford on April 13, 1960 in The Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They have five children: a girl and four boys. They began their married life in Whittier, California, where Elmer grew up, and where Winelle taught elementary school. She continued teaching until 1962, a few months after their first child was born. In 1964, Winelle and Elmer moved to St. Louis, MO, so Elmer could attend dental school. After graduation, they moved back to California, where they lived for the next 39 years, raising their family there. She returned to teaching when her youngest child was in middle school, normally teaching first or second grade and acting as a reading specialist. She cared a great deal for her students and delighted in their progress, especially at her last job, where she worked with many disadvantaged children. A very active participant in her church, Winelle served in many capacities there, including choir director, early-morning seminary teacher, Relief Society President, and temple worker. In 2007, Winelle and her husband traveled to Ireland where they served for 18 months as missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After their mission, Winelle and Elmer retired to the Boise area to be closer to family. Winelle spent the past 15 years of her life as a Treasure Valley resident, where she made many friends and enjoyed serving others. Her life impacted many people, but none were as affected as her family members, whom she served faithfully and selflessly at great personal cost. She will be missed tremendously. Winelle is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bob, and one grandchild Brian Carle. She is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years; her children Karen (Scott) Carle, Christopher (Tammy), Michael (Liza), Erik (Julie), Jonathan (Valerie); grandchildren Ian Carle, Christa (Bryan) Powell, Colin Carle, Joshua Wilford, Lauren Wilford, Nathan Wilford, Ethan Wilford, Sabrina Wilford, Benjamin Wilford, Justin Wilford, Erin Wilford, Emily Wilford, Abigail Wilford, Luke Wilford, Rachel Wilford, Jared Wilford, and Samantha Wilford. Funeral Services will be held in Nampa at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 88 S. Happy Valley Road, on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:00AM, with a viewing from 9:30 -10:45AM prior to the service. Internment will be at Kohlerlawn Cemetery following the service.
