Walter "Walt" Glen Miller was born December 1, 1935, at home near Redington, Nebraska, the youngest of six born to Edra Miller and Mary Katherine Cornmesser Miller. He was raised and educated first in Bridgeport, Nebraska and then in 1945, he moved to Ontario, Oregon where he graduated from high school. At the age of 18, Walt went to work for Southern Pacific Railroad in Imperial Valley, California as a telegrapher and relief agent until 1958, when he was drafted into the service. He served in the U.S. Army and was one of the 60 original members of The Long-Range Reconnaissance Patrol in Germany where he served for 18 months. He was honorably discharged in June of 1960 and received a Good Conduct Medal and the Expert Infantry Badge. In 1961, he was employed by the Idaho Statesman as a district manager of delivery and worked for the Statesman over 14 years. In 1967, he married Dorris Evelyn Hafer. They made their first home in Twin Falls, Idaho and six years later moved back to Boise, Idaho. Walt and Dorris often worked side by side cleaning up properties to either rent or sell. In 1978, they bought and operated the Riverside Motel in McCall and also managed several rental condos in that area. In 1995, they moved to Nampa where in 1999, Dorris was diagnosed with dementia. Walt was faithfully devoted and tirelessly served Dorris' every need until her passing in 2010. For more than 14 years Walt has performed an integral part in the Canyon County Alzheimer's & Dementia Support Group helping many others meet the challenge of this difficult disease. In 1979, Walt joined Rotary Club in McCall, Idaho. When he moved to Nampa, he joined the Nampa Rotary Club and has been a member ever since. In Rotary he has served in various capacities. He was especially known as a "champion" of the Hope House. Many of the Hope House children have been blessed by Walt's service and generosity. For many years he has hosted on his yard the annual Hope House garage sale. Walt is survived by his stepchildren: Vernon "Jim" Hafer, Patricia "Pat" (Steve) Hall, Constance "Connie" Paul Richardson, and Virginia "Ginny" (Gus) Kinnas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by one sibling Mary Georgine Davis of Sparks, Nevada.
