Verla M.
Larsen
Oct 10, 1929 — Dec 28, 2024
Verla M. Larsen, age 95, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away on December 28, 2024. She was born on October 10, 1929, to Silas and Roma (Harris) Brannam, and grew up with four brothers and three sisters during the difficult struggles of the Great Depression. Mom once said she didn't see how the family could have managed without the help of the Salvation Army. Once, when out seeing a movie with high school friends, the crowd they were in surged. Many toppled. Jack T. Larsen, country boy, landed on Verla Mae Brannam, town girl, which led to marriage and a shivaree on July 8, 1946. Thereafter, they led a life that involved raising a family (Ronny, Cindy, Jonny, Jimmy, Cody and an occasional stray), and moving frequently throughout the many small towns and communities of SW Idaho, SE Oregon and Northern California. Mom tallied one time and found she had moved lock, stock, and barrel at least 25 times in her married life. During that time, she completed her H.S. degree and worked as a postal and store clerk while raising the kids. Dad often commented "Verla raised the kids" because he was so frequently away working. We were five well-behaved and delightful children who never caused her a bit of trouble or worry. While living in Bly, Oregon, she and Dad joined the LDS church, and while living in Jordan Valley they pretty much joined the rodeo. Wherever she and Dad set up camp she always managed to make friends and become a participant in community life and events. Although she married a cowboy, she had zero interest in ever getting on a horse. At rodeos she was the scorekeeper, never the barrel racer. Ultimately, they moved to Murphy, Idaho, and settled into community life where, on July 16, 2016, with all five kids and spouses attending, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Verla is preceded in death by her parents, Silas and Roma (Harris) Brannam; husband, Jack Larsen; son, Cody Wynn Larsen; and all siblings except her brother, Bob Brannam (Ann). She is survived by sons, Ron (Tom), Jonny (Karen), and Jim (Sarah); daughter, Cindy ( Bob); and daughter in-law Karyn (Cody); nine grandchildren: Bobby, Windi, Shawn, Mackenzie, Cassie, Martin, Amber, Jaci, and Trent; eleven great-grandchildren: Josh, Olivia, Lily, Samantha, Kayla, Cody E., Jake Jr, Annie, Ava, Nora, Brittaney, and Breanna; and one great-great-grandchild Maddox. Graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm, Friday, January 3, 2025, at Marsing-Homedale Cemetery, 4410 Cemetery Rd Marsing ID, 83639.
