Obituary

Terrell Winn Spackman (75) passed away peacefully at his home the morning of April 21, 2026, in Nampa, Idaho, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family, friends, and many loved ones. Terry was born in Preston, Idaho, on September 18, 1950, to Stuart Dee Spackman and Lanore Winn Spackman as their first child. He would go on to graduate high school at Preston High School and enroll in college for a degree in accounting. Shortly after classes began, he started his career as a truck driver that would span over five decades, during which he would primarily haul fuel across the Rocky Mountain region. He drove over 5 million miles, over 50 plus years with zero at-fault accidents—a testament to his work ethic, attention to detail, and motivation to do quality work. Additionally, Terry was an avid sportsman. He worked on a farm while growing up but was still able to find time for sports. He was a member of the 1968 Preston High School basketball team. When he was a senior, they won the state championship for 3A basketball. He's quoted as saying, "I was open when I walked off the bus" in regard to his offensive prowess on the court. He and Jo, his wife, had season tickets to BSU basketball games, and he would often talk basketball, comparing/contrasting how the game had changed since his playing days. Terry also enjoyed bowling. At one point, he bowled for Utah State Aggies and continued bowling after he graduated in a men's league in both Boise and Burley for several years. Terry's true passion, however, was golf. Terry was a great golfer. He fell in love with the sport in his twenties and started playing tournaments in his early thirties. Bluntly, he won more golf tournaments than many people have played in. Some of these would include three Idaho State 4-Ball Championships; placed top 4 multiple times in the IGA Men's State Amateur; multiple wins in the George Von Elm Memorial, the Magic Valley Amateur, the Rupert Amateur, the Burley Amateur, and the Buhl Amateur (including the 1937 amateur—he even has the hat to prove it!); and many club championships, best balls, scrambles, etc. He has around 8 holes-in-one, give or take 1-2, as he stated getting a hole in one on a par 3 executive course does not count. He was a regular on the Idaho Carter Cup team, playing for the amateur team against the professionals, and held one of the best overall records for the team during this period. He shot his age, or better, at least 5 times. When Terry was in his 40s and after winning a tournament in Eastern Idaho, the head golf coach of Utah State offered Terry a golf scholarship. The coach mentioned he had just beaten all the players on his current team. Terry had to decline the offer as he had family and was running a family trucking business.

Though he was a staunch competitor and a person who did not like to lose, he was also noted for being a gentleman and accepting a loss with class. This meant congratulating his opponent with a handshake and often a word about how well they played. He was a great playing partner not only due to his skill but also because he was gregarious, witty, and often shared memories of rounds past. He had the ability to recall where he was on the leaderboard, who he was playing with, the specific hole he was on, what club he had in his hand, and where the wind was blowing, all of which further highlighted his passion for the game of golf. We listened to each one intently, even if we had already heard it many times over the years. Terry is survived by his wife Jo Ellen Spackman; his three children Sawyer (Filip) Szczypka, Karsyn, and Jaxon Spackman; his six bonus children gained through marriage, including his sons Chase (Destiny) and Jason Carraway; his father Stuart Dee Spackman; his sisters Robin (Gene) Price, Laurie Jean (Donny) McNabb, and Portia Kay Higens; and his brother Tracy Cole (Denise) Spackman, as well as many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother, Lanore Winn Spackman. Thank you to all that have expressed condolences, shared stories, and offered so much love during this difficult time. Terry's legacy will live on in those stories we tell and the memories we share, and his spirit will continue to inspire all of us both on and off the course. There will not be a formal funeral service, but details will be provided at a later date for a celebration in his honor.
