Roy Joseph Gray, lovingly known as "Joe," passed away on April 16, 2026, in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 78. Joe was born in Pleasant Hill, Illinois, the second of eight children to Athol B. "Rastus" and Dorothy Ellen Yelton Gray. At the age of 11, he moved with his family to McCall, Idaho, where he grew up, attended local schools, and graduated from McCall-Donnelly High School in 1966. In 1967, Joe answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably in Vietnam, carrying with him a quiet strength and resilience that would shape the rest of his life. Following his military service, Joe built a hardworking and dedicated career, first as a logger with JI Morgan and later in law enforcement. He served his community as a Valley County Deputy, with the Weiser Police Department, and at the Idaho State Correctional Institute until his retirement in 2007. Joe found his greatest joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. He was an avid fisherman and cherished time spent hunting with his sons and family. Many treasured memories were made over the years at Steck Park, where weekends were filled with laughter, stories, and togetherness. Joe also found peace and satisfaction in gardening and yard work, enjoyed trips to the Oregon coast, trying his luck at "the slots," working on puzzles, and even exploring painting. On July 16, 1972, Joe married the love of his life, Marjorie Piepkorn. Together, they built a life centered on family and devotion, raising their two sons, Jerry and Bill. Joe was a proud grandfather to Jordon, Marjorie, Megan, and Hannah, and a great-grandfather to one, Amelia. His family was his greatest legacy and the center of his heart. Joe was a baptized Baptist and held a deep and growing love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. His faith was a quiet but steady presence in his life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marjorie; his sons, Jerry (Taren) and William (Shannon); his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchild; siblings Ira (Lucy), Sheilah, and Ed (Danielle); as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents; brothers Danny and Justin Gray; and sisters Janice Norfleet and Tina Pennington. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at St. Luke's Nampa, the V.A. Hospital in Boise, and to Delcy Crane—Joe's sister-in-law—who lovingly stayed with him during his final night through the No One Dies Alone program. Joe held a special place in his heart for all of his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Dry Creek Cemetery, located at 9600 W. Hill Road in Boise, Idaho. Joe will be remembered for his steady presence, his love of family, and the quiet ways he showed care and devotion throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
