Mark Hoagland

Mark Wood Hoagland, 85, of Melba, Idaho, passed away peacefully of natural causes on June 16, 2026, in Melba, surrounded by the love of his family and faith. Mark was born on November 5, 1940, in Nampa, Idaho, to Clyde Mackey Hoagland and Clara Vivian Hoagland. He was the fourth child in his family and spent his entire life rooted in the Melba Valley and Reynolds Creek areas that he loved so dearly. Growing up in Melba, Mark treasured his childhood experiences in the Owyhee Mountains with his father and older brother, Gordon. He often recalled helping gather cattle in the rugged country. On chilly autumn days, his father would build a fire to keep the boys warm while they worked, creating memories that stayed with him throughout his life. On December 15, 1959, Mark married the love of his life, Marie Golightly, in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They first met when Marie moved from Preston, Idaho, and began attending Melba High School. Their marriage was a partnership of devotion, faith, and family that endured for more than 65 years. Mark attended the one-room schoolhouse at Reynolds Creek before graduating from Melba High School. He pursued higher education and earned a degree in science from BYU-Provo. After teaching for one year, he returned to farming before obtaining his teaching certificate from Boise State University. Mark taught mathematics and science at Melba High School and coached sports at Melba Junior High School. He influenced countless students through his dedication, patience, and examples until his retirement in the early 2000s. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mark devoted his life to serving his Heavenly Father. He served in numerous church callings alongside his beloved wife. Together they completed a two-year mission in Richmond, Virginia. Upon returning home, Mark continued his service as a temple worker in the Boise Idaho Temple. Mark was an avid reader, particularly enjoying church history and classic western novels. Above all else, he loved his family. He rarely missed a sporting event, church activity, recital, or performance involving his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. His steady support, quiet strength, and unwavering faith were blessings to all who knew him. Mark is survived by his sister Delores Hoagland; his brother, Blaine Hoagland; his children: LaVone (Roger) Caresia, Cleon (Patti) Hoagland, Kenny Hoagland, Rochelle Jeske, Curtis (Maria) Hoagland, and Jeff (Candice) Hoagland; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; infant son, Edward; parents, Clyde and Clara Hoagland; his sister, Nelwyn; his brother, Gordon Hoagland; and his great-grandsons Beckham and Keaton. Those who knew Mark will remember his deep love for his family, his steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, his dedication to education and community, and his lifelong commitment to serving others. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched as a husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, farmer, missionary, and friend. A graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. on June 25, 2026, at the Melba Cemetery.
