Obituary

Margaret Diane Haight Harris, "Diane," passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025 surrounded by her family in Eagle, Idaho. Diane was born on April 9, 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Harold Don Haight and Margaret Harvey Haight. She was the eldest of 4 children.

Raised in Salt Lake City, Diane graduated from Olympus High School in 1959. She then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she studied to become a secondary school teacher. While at BYU, she met her future husband, Joseph William Harris Jr., while they were working on a joint project between their social units. Diane and Joe continued dating and were engaged when Joe graduated BYU in April 1961. On August 24, 1961, Diane and Joe were married in the Salt Lake Temple by Apostle Marion G. Romney, who was a childhood friend of Joe's father. They shared 58 cherished years together before Joe's passing in 2019.

Diane and Joe raised their 4 children in Southern California, but business took them to multiple states over the years, including Oregon, Florida, Nevada, and Utah. They also lived in the Hawaiian Islands for 7 years—first on Maui, then on Kauai during the rebuilding of the island after Hurricane Iniki. When Diane attended her 60th high school reunion, she received an award for having lived in the most states (8) for at least 6 months. Diane and Joe traveled extensively, visiting Canada, Mexico, Australia, Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

After living in Draper, Utah, where Joe helped build and manage a restaurant until his retirement in 2001, they moved to Nampa, Idaho in 2002. While there, Diane was a reading teacher for 11 years in the Kuna School District.

Two years after Joe's passing, Diane moved to Bridgeview Independent Living in Twin Falls, Idaho. She treasured her years at Bridgeview, surrounded by her daughter Janel's family, fellow church members, and lovely friends. She enjoyed leading the choir and helping with activities. Her love of reading inspired her to write her first published novel, Fashionably Late, at the age of 82.

Diane had a gift for making people feel included and loved. Her attentiveness to others' needs and constant encouragement made her a positive influence in the lives of many, especially her family and an always expanding group of friends. She had a way of lifting people up and nurturing the potential she saw in her loved ones. Her greatest love and focus was her family. She found her deepest joy in spending time with her children, her 16 grandchildren and their spouses, and her great-grandchildren. Family gatherings when everyone was together were her happiest moments.

Diane was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including Stake and Ward Young Women's President, as well as Ward Relief Society President. She also made significant contributions to genealogical work, indexing over 20,000 names. Diane's strong testimony and love for the Savior and her Heavenly Father, along with her dedication to temple attendance, provided strength throughout her life, especially in times of loss. Her belief in the eternal nature of the family gave her great comfort.

Diane is survived by son, John Hyrum Harris (Susan), daughters, Laura Diane Hales (Brent), Janel Marie Williams (Brad), Carol Lynn McNairy, grandchildren, Tyler Harris (Courtney), Joseph Harris (Susan), Alexis Gardner (Mitch), Kristine Dalmas (Josh), Derrick Hales (Alicia), Lauren Hales (Brooklyn), Ashley Hales (Justin), Alec Hales (Maddie), Mae Hales (Hunter), Emilee Jardine (Marcus), Harrison Williams (Lindsay), Lindsey Williams, Katelyn Williams, Abigail Williams, Marina McNairy, Maika McNairy, great-grandchildren, Kingsley Harris, Beckett Harris, Hannah Harris, Graham Harris, Nora Harris, Brynlee Gardner, Landon Gardner, Jane Hales, Heath Hales, Audrey Hales, Jonah Gonzalez, Millie Mae Hales, Hudson Jardine, Logan Jardine, and sister, Kathy Hodgman (Gary).
