Obituary

Leslie "Les" Cuthbert Short, age 54, was born in Seascale, Cumbria, England, on 4 March 1971, and passed away on 21 October 2025.

He is survived by his wife, Liz (McAllister) Short; his father, Alfred, and his wife, Sheila; his best mate, Mark Fletcher; his sister, Victoria; nieces and nephew Zoe Clement, Leanne and Zack Fisher; and many aunties and uncles. He was preceded in death by his sister, Samantha, and his mother, Pauline. Les was described by everyone who met him as a lovely lad and a wonderful man, with a dry, British sense of humour.

He loved the band Queen and would probably make a wry joke this week about how "The Show Must Go On" without him. You can access a playlist of Les and Liz's favorite songs at https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDSZQMtQj3eT5mDCKUza3Vo8YRjJhdMBP. Since childhood, Les has been passionate about video games and owned a vast collection of consoles, games, and related items from the 1970s through the present day. Games he preordered are still arriving in the mail. He enjoyed visiting AMT Games, a video game store in Caldwell, Idaho, or searching pawn shops and thrift stores for rare, interesting artifacts.

Les was an avid follower of Wigan Warriors Rugby League. He has attended the team's matches since the 1980s, including at Wembley Stadium in London, and supported his team win or lose. Those interested in making a charitable donation on Les' behalf should offer their support to the Wigan Warriors Community Foundation, which can be found online at https://wiganwarriors.com/community. Les adored Christmas and turned into a little kid again every year. He would begin buying presents months before the holidays and even maintained a year-round Christmas tree. He would make the fun of opening Christmas presents last all day long and created a Boxing Day tradition where he and Liz watched different adaptations of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" throughout the day. Incidentally, Les determined that the best version out of the many, many adaptations was the 1999 production starring Patrick Stewart.

Les was a homebody. He did not drive, so he navigated the earth by foot, bus, boat, and airplane. He was very selective about who he developed friendships with, and he ended up with a core group of remarkable individuals who absolutely adored him.

Les finished his schooling at age 16 and then worked a variety of jobs, including at a pub, a bed factory, and his family's hotel. His last job was at Chadwick's Butchers in Standish, where he made meat pies and sausage rolls. He was also known for making the best hot chocolate.

Les was also passionate about science fiction franchises such as Star Wars, Star Trek, and most of all Doctor Who (although he was not as enthusiastic about the past few Doctors). In 2011, Les met his wife, Liz, on Twitter discussing Doctor Who. Les' father, Alf, described the couple as "a match made in heaven," and anybody who ever met them would agree instantly. A photo album of their life together and images from Les' previous life in England is online at https://photos.app.goo.gl/5KQU9BH1GSkP6w4j7.

They first met in person in 2012, when Liz traveled to Wigan and Blackpool to meet Les and his family. Les visited her in Michigan and Chicago later that year.

In 2013, Les sold all of his collections and other possessions to raise enough money to move to Idaho, where he and Liz were married in January 2014.

Les lived in Idaho for the rest of his life. Although he missed English food and weather and never found fish and chips in the States that compared to the fare in England, he eventually developed a taste for Popeye's Chicken and would occasionally go to McDonald's and order 40 chicken nuggets and a strawberry milkshake.

Les and Liz spent much of their time together enjoying a wide variety of films and television shows, and Les inundated Liz with gifts. He was an active listener and a true romantic, and on countless occasions would suddenly present Liz with something she had mentioned in passing weeks or months earlier. Les was a wonderful human being and a laid-back sort of lad. He was beloved by dogs and small children, and he cared deeply for everybody he knew.
