Obituary

On December 23, 2024, Larry chose to let go. He passed away at St. Luke's Hospital, Nampa, surrounded by loved ones who were able to make it there before his passing. Larry had suffered from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis for over 6 years, a result of Agent Orange, asbestos, jet fuels & solvents, burn pits, etc. from his time in Vietnam. Over those 6 years, his ability to breathe decreased continually. Family noticed his breathing diminishing even more after Thanksgiving. His oxygen was extremely low and was rushed to the hospital on December 20th. Early morning December 23, Larry decided that he was ready to let go and too exhausted to fight the fight anymore. Larry was born on July 26th, 1947 in Ontario, Oregon, the first born child to Keith Cornwall and Betty Kinnaman Cornwall. His sister, Sherry Rosalie, was born in 1949. In 1950, the family moved to the Washington, D.C. area for Keith to take a job with the C.I.A. During Keith's CIA career and in Larry's younger years, the family lived in Virginia, Cyprus Island, England and Iran. While in Iran, in 1958, his youngest sister, Tamara Lynn was adopted. At 17, Larry chose not to go with his family back to Iran but joined the U.S. military instead. Initially, his dad wanted him to join the Navy, as he had done, but that didn't work out and he chose to join the Marine Corp. He readily admitted that he had no idea what he was getting into. February 3rd, 1966 he stepped off the bus at Parris Island, North Carolina, for boot camp. He loved the Marine Corp. By the time he got to Vietnam he was a helicopter gunner and crew chief on a UH46 Marine helicopter. He was very proud to be part of the unit HMM364 Purple Foxes in Vietnam. He loved swapping "war stories" with anyone who would listen. He left the Marine Corp in March of 1970. He spent some time with his family in Virginia then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he attended Spartan School of Aeronautics to become an A&P mechanic (aircraft) outside the military. There he met and married Tena Meyers. They had 5 children, Larry, Shelia, Steven, Rosalie & Marilee. They divorced in the spring of 1983. Larry moved to Caldwell, Idaho to be near his parents after that, where he met and married Renee (Shelby) Padilla in September of 1983 and welcomed her 3 children, Shanna, Brianne & Billy as his own. In June of 1984, they welcomed their surprise child, Nicole. Larry became a member of the Idaho Army Air National Guard 1-183rd in 1985 until his retirement in 2005. He also obtained a civil service job with the National Guard weekdays. He again was working with helicopters, initially UH-1 "Huey", then Blackhawks, Apaches and Apache Longbows. During his tenure, in August of 2002, his National Guard unit was deployed to Bosnia with the United Nation's peace-keeping forces, Operation Enduring Freedom, spending approximately 8 months there. During his time with the Guard he earned the nickname "Badger". It became his call sign. Soon after returning home from Bosnia, Larry retired from the Guard. A few years later he took a job with Western Air Express (Cargo Haulers) in their supply room in Boise. That job led to another job in Wichita, Kansas with EagleMed (helicopter and fixed wing air ambulances). Larry and Renee were there from May 2006 to March 2013. They had no family in Wichita, so they had to depend on each other more and got a lot closer to each other. They enjoyed their time there with the EagleMed family. Upon returning to Boise, Larry and Renee moved in with Renee's mother to care for her for 3 years. At that time they moved back into their Boise home until Larry started having breathing issues and trouble going up and down the stairs. The house was sold and they downsized and moved into a duplex for 10 months. They moved in with Larry's parents in September 2019 to help with his father, who at 94 had become bedridden. He passed away September 28th. His mother was 89 and Larry and Renee chose to stay to watch over her. Larry was artistic in many ways. Drawing and music came easy to him and was a big part of his life. He started drawing around the time of middle school. In England, he learned to crochet and embroider like all the kids. He started with the accordion around the age of 12 while living in Iran. Then he played several brass instruments in the Falls Church, Virginia high school band. After that, it was the guitar and teaching others to play. He taught himself to play harmonica like his mom and dad. His mother also played the violin and mandolin. It ran in the family. Bluegrass music was his favorite and he played and 'jammed' with the Idaho Bluegrass Association. He would also attend the Weiser Fiddle Festival to jam with attendees. He played the guitar, mandolin, banjo, harmonica and was working on the fiddle. Larry was a member of the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints, Caldwell 18th Ward. Larry was preceded in death by his father Keith Cornwall, his sister Sherry (Cornwall) Smith and a granddaughter Tisha Marie Bivins. Larry is survived by his mother, Betty Cornwall, sister, Tammy Cornwall Conklin, his wife, Renee and 9 children. Larry Cornwall (Heidi), Shelia Rapp (Aaron), Steven Cornwall (Sandra), Marilee Holmes (Donny), and Rosalie Hansen (James), Shanna Shields (Keith), Brianne Wallgren (Curt), Billy Padilla (Jennifer), Nicole Cornia (Ryan), 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who he adored and loved to be around whenever he could.
