Obituary

Jerry Moser Hess, beloved father and grandfather slipped from this life to the next on June 24, 2023, at his home in Nampa, Idaho surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his brothers, William and John Hess; four children: Christy Garner (Charles), Karen Dillon (Sheldon), Layne Hess, and Mark Hess (Sussi); 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry was born on January 26, 1938, in Preston, Idaho to Arvilla Moser Hess and Lewis Wilford Hess. He was the 4th of five children, with one sister and three brothers.

He spent his childhood years in Clifton, Idaho and had many wonderful experiences growing up on a farm where he learned early how to work hard and be self-sufficient.

At the age of eight, his parents moved the family to Nampa where at a very young age he began to visualize his entrepreneurial desires of owning his own successful business.

In 1959, at age 21, he left his employer, and started J.M. Hess Construction Co., becoming one of the early thriving concrete construction companies in the Treasure Valley, which he owned and operated for over 50 years.

Jerry met the love of his life, JoAn Elaine Hughes at the Roller Drome in Nampa and chased her till she married him. They were later sealed in the Logan Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and raised six children.

Serving the community in various civic responsibilities was extremely important to Jerry. He believed in giving back to society as he served many years on the Nampa School board, State Permanent Building Advisory Council, State Board of Education, and many other public positions.

Teaching the restored gospel to his family and spending quality time on family trips to places like Sun Valley and Newport Beach brought him great joy.

Jerry developed a burning conviction of the gospel of Jesus Christ and spent his life as a student of the scriptures. He served in many capacities in his Church including: Bishop, First Counselor in a Stake Presidency, the first mission president of the California Riverside Mission, and Director of the Palmyra Church Historical sites from 2000-2002.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, JoAn of more than sixty years; sister, Barbara Cook; brother, Edward Hess; two of his sons Jerry M Hess, Jr., and Kelly Lee Hess; a granddaughter Jentry Dillon and grandson Sheldon James Dillon.
