Garry
Pope
Mar 7, 1942 — Mar 8, 2026
Garry Dean Pope (Tony) was born on March 7, 1942, in Blackfoot, Idaho, at his grandmother's house to Harry Dean Pope and Rhoda Alice (Winmill) Pope. He was the third of five children. He passed away at the hospital surrounded by his family on March 8, 2026, at the age of 84. Garry grew up in Blackfoot, Idaho, enjoying exploring with his brothers and getting into mischief. He enjoyed swimming in the river, fishing, and climbing haystacks on the farm. A few months after graduating from Blackfoot High School in 1960, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Iceland during the early phases of the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he met the love of his life, Janet Irene Tlucek, from Nampa, Idaho. Their first date was on New Year's Eve at a church dance. Eight months later, they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 16, 1966. Garry began his career as an automotive mechanic at JCPenney's. He was promoted to a supervisory position there and continued working there until the automotive division of JCPenney closed its doors numerous years later. He continued his career as the director of the mechanic shop for the Canyon County Sheriff's Office until he retired. Garry enjoyed being involved in the community softball program. He coached many teams for several years and eventually began umpiring for the Amateur Softball Association (ASA). In 1999, he won an award for Idaho's Most Outstanding Umpire. Ultimately, he scheduled, ran, and promoted many tournaments, including fundraising for muscular dystrophy, as the head of the regional umpires for ASA. As a hobby, Garry enjoyed making leather items for people. He excelled in woodworking, building anything a person may want or could imagine. He did numerous remodels and additions to their home and built extremely nice wooden dressers for each grandchild. Garry was a great cook. There have been numerous family BBQs, dinners, and get-togethers that he has helped with. Garry loved his family and was proud of his children's achievements. He especially doted on his grandchildren, delighting in their milestones, cheering them on at every game and recital, and always making time for stories, laughter, and guidance. In recent years, he found immense joy in his great-grandchildren, cherishing the new generation with the same love and devotion he shared with all his family. Garry is survived by his loving wife Janet; his children Wendy Howell (Gary VanHouten) of Caldwell, ID, and Garry Pope Jr. of Kuna, ID; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his sister, Lois Hern, of Hamilton, MT; his brother, Mike (Laraine) Pope, of Blackfoot, ID; and his sister-in-law, Rita Pope, of Blackfoot, ID. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law William Stanley Tlucek; his mother-in-law Emma Ceclia (Sedlacek) Tlucek; his sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Clay) Putnum; his brother, William "Bill" Pope; his brothers-in-law, Roy Hern, William Richard Tlucek, and Ronald Eugene Ormsby; his sister-in-law Lily May (Tlucek) Archer; and one niece and three nephews.
