Obituary

On May 15, 2025, Douglas John Grigg, husband and father of 8 children, peacefully stepped away from mortality to join a happy reunion with his loved ones at the earthly age of 95. "Dougie" as his family called him, was born at home on February 27, 1930. He was the 11th child of Ammon Anderson and Mary "Maida" Pratt Gardner Grigg who had already been christened with the title of grandparents twice before his arrival. Their advancing age, large posterity, and tiny house did not prevent Dougie from receiving a large dose of love and spoiling by everyone around him. He grew up in Kuna, Idaho and spent a lot of time in Prairie, Idaho on his sister Cleo's farm. In 1947, at the age of 17, he and his friend Harry Mumford left to go work at the Anderson Ranch Damn. There he met and married his first wife Dorothy "June" Kepler. On July 11, 1948 his first daughter Dorothy Yvonne Grigg was born. Two years later while working construction in anchorage, Alaska, his wife June passed away from lung cancer. Dorothy was sent to live with her maternal grandparents when Doug joined the Navy in January of 1951. In April of 1954, Doug received the devastating news that his daughter Dorothy was deathly ill. She passed away at the age of 5 before he could get to her. By this time, Doug had met and married a beautiful young woman while stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego. Her name was Maurine June MacRorie. Their first child Julianne Grigg was born in July 1954. A second daughter Mary June Grigg was born in January 1956. Doug was now blessed with a wife, two daughters and a stepson named Jerry. His time in the Navy as an AT3 ended November 1954 and he started working at Pacific Telephone in Orange County, California. Life was good until it was not. Doug and Maurine were divorced several years later. A few years passed before life brought a new adventure in the form of a young, spunky blonde 23-year-old by the name of Ethel Rose Hall. Ethel was a telephone operator at Pac Tel and was 12 years his junior. They were married on Feb. 14, 1964. Ethel wanted children and so they tried for two years without success. They were able to start the adoption of a baby and happy in the knowledge of a baby on the way, Ethel relaxed. And got pregnant. David John was born March 1966 and Cassandra Jean was born 6 months later. Another daughter Tamsin Lee followed in November 1967 and twins James Anderson and Robert Douglas in December 1968. Five babies in less than 3 years. They were living a great life in southern California. Doug was in the top 1st level craft management at Pacific Telephone and doing very well. In 1973, Doug was tasked with selling his parents property in Kuna, Idaho. Feeling a very strong prompting from the spirit, Doug realized that he needed to move his young family to Kuna and raise them on the same land that he grew up on. This meant taking an $800/month paycut and going from top management in Pacific Telephone to an entry level position in Mountain Bell. It also meant going from a 3 mile commute to a 20 mile commute; and a nice 4 bedroom subdivision home to a 800 square foot old house that was bought sight unseen and moved on to the Kuna property. It was an astronomical sacrifice but his faith was unshakeable. His wife brave and faithful. In May 1974, they packed up their home and kids and moved to the rural Idaho countryside. In 1982, the government broke up the phone company and Doug was forced into retirement after 27 years. He worked odd jobs until 1985 when he stumbled onto his next career. After trying to buy a car as a graduation present for his daughter and not being able to find an honest car dealer, he decided that he would start his own dealership and Kuna Auto Mart was born. Doug built the car lot as a service to help others be able to buy a car from an honest dealer who really cared. During this time, Doug and Ethel were able to serve two LDS senior missions. From 1995 to 1996 they served in the Little Rock, Arkansas mission and in 2002 to 2003 they served at the Palmyra, New York historical site. Doug had a life-long love of missionary work and shared his testimony with everyone he met. Doug had a happy, fun-loving personality and all that knew him will agree that he was hard-working, honest, tender, playful, frugal, content family man with a deep love of the gospel and for his savior. If you ever needed anything, he was always there willing to give you the shirt off his back. He loved cars, playing pool, boating, waterskiing, push-up contests, doing handstands, and was famous for his "swan dive" at the swimming pool. During his lifetime, he fathered 8 children, 38 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Proceeded in death by both parents, all 10 siblings, his wives Dorothy June Grigg and Maureen MacRorie Untch, daughters Dorothy Yvonne Grigg and Juliann Grigg Rodgers. Survived by his wife Ethel Grigg, children Mary (Peter) Lindstrom, David Grigg, Cassandra (Don)Kellogg, Tamsin (Ken)Bronson, James (Shelise) Grigg, and Robert (Lisa) Grigg. Funeral services will be held on May 23, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 313 E. Deer Flat Rd., Kuna, Idaho at 11:00 AM. Interment at Kuna Cemetery immediately following the service.
