Obituary

David Capell Haight, 74, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away June 25, 2026, at age 74, after a very short battle with pancreatic cancer.

David was born April 12, 1952, at St. Luke's Hospital in Boise, to Lloyd Ellison Haight and Genevieve Capell Haight.

David grew up in Boise, graduating from Boise High in 1970. He attended Boise State University briefly before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M., where he worked as a security policeman.

After his discharge from the military, Dave attended Idaho State University, studying computer science. He was very familiar with Pocatello, having visited his grandparents there many times as a child.

After college, Dave went to work at Boise State University. It was there that he met his future wife, Brenda Gant. They were married in December 1984, after dating for just 3 months.

David loved working as a software engineer. After Boise State, he worked for the Department of Health and Welfare for several years, and ended his career at Boise Cascade/Boise Paper, retiring in 2014.

David and Brenda lived in the Kuna area for 27 years, before moving to their retirement home in Nampa in 2013. During nice weather, Dave could always be found on the front porch playing his guitar. And that's how most of the neighbors remember him...the guy with the guitar on the front porch.

David had a lifelong love of music. In high school, he played trumpet and led the pep band at athletic events. He also was in the pep band at Boise State. When he was in his 30s, he started guitar lessons. And an obsession was born. For many years he traveled to Roanoke, Va., as well as St. Louis, to participate in flat pick workshops. Locally, he also went to the Weiser Fiddle Festival for many years. He never saw any of the fiddle competition. Rather, he would take off in his pickup and camper and meet his friends at the "Stickerville" camping spot for several days, where they spent endless hours jamming together.

During the summer, David and Brenda spent a lot of time at the family cabin in Donnelly. Each morning, Dave would drive to the Flight of Fancy coffee shop in Donnelly and set up his guitar gear on the patio, where he would play for several hours. Susan, the owner of the coffee shop, always fed him breakfast and made sure to get his tip jar started. It was one of the highlights of summer for David.

David was a diabetic for more than 25 years. In 2018, his kidneys finally failed and he started dialysis. In 2019, David underwent a kidney transplant, with a kidney donated by Brenda. The transplant was a huge success, and Dave regained his freedom without dialysis.

In December 2025, David was diagnosed with ampullary cancer, a rare and aggressive GI cancer in the pancreatic area. He fought hard, but there were too many setbacks and hospitalizations along the way, and ultimately the cancer won.

Special thanks to David's sister-in-law Sharon Bolinder of Boise, Idaho, who provided endless support when David was hospitalized numerous times during the last two years. Sharon came into David's life when he was 12. He always thought of her as a big sister, and they were very close.

Thanks also to David and Brenda’s next door neighbors Lance and Lynne Nielsen, who came to the rescue numerous times during Dave's health issues the past two years.

David was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Douglas Capell Haight, and his nephew Matthew Haight.

David is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Brenda L. Haight, of Nampa, Idaho. He is also survived by a son from his first marriage, John Anthony Haight and wife Becky, of Centerville, Utah, and their children Jackson, Amelia, Daniel, Gabriel and Elleanor.

Arrangements are under the direction of Zeyer Funeral Home in Nampa. Graveside services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the Melba Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Melba Senior Center.
