With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Alvin Chong Der on December 13, 2024, due to a massive heart attack. He was born on July 16, 1970, in Richmond, VA. Throughout his life, Alvin nurtured several talents and, more often than not, took the road less traveled. His life was filled with many accomplishments, but he will be most remembered for the unwavering love and support he gave as a devoted brother.

Alvin's passion for learning was a defining part of his life. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington University, completed all the coursework for medical school, and later chose to pursue a massage therapy license, demonstrating his commitment to growth in both mind and body.

However, we believe Alvin's greatest legacy was his love and devotion to his family. As the eldest sibling, he was a steadfast support system. He helped Jonathan financially through college and welcomed Victoria into his home after her freshman year. With his thoughtful and intuitive nature, he was the best gift giver in the family, always attuned to the needs and wants of each family member.

We will deeply miss Alvin. He is survived by his siblings, Jonathan and Victoria; nieces, nephews; and countless friends whose lives he touched. Our love is in the details: we will miss his spontaneous soprano harmonies, his signature slow vibrato on the violin, his playful raised eyebrows, and the pride with which he embraced his role as Ge Ge (big brother).
