Cloyd Vernon Bates was born September 30, 1936 to Earnest George and Sarah Louise Butler Bates. He was the 14th child of Earnest and the seventh of Louise. He was born at the Piquet home in Bates, Idaho. Cloyd grew up on the family farm with lots of music, love and hard work. There were cows to milk, chickens to feed, eggs to gather and horses to harness and ride. His parents always grew a very good garden to keep the family fed. They had fruit trees and strawberries and raspberries. Earnest played for community dances. He taught his kids to play an instrument. Dad learned the violin. Music was an integral part of family life. They grew hay and grain to sustain the farm and family. Dad served a stint in the National Guard and was discharged just as the Viet Nam conflict began. He served a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission, which was the same mission area in which his father served. Dad mainly served in Texas. Dad met Eleanor Ree McIntosh and they were married September 23, 1966. They had six children: Elinor Lynette (Wes) Barrus, Michelle M. Bates, Charlene (Eric) Davenport, Michael Aaron (Eloisa) Bates, Adella Maria Bates, and Donald Duane (Amber) Bates. They had 22 grandchildren. Dad was preceded in death by 10 of his brothers and sisters and his daughter Maria.
